When first released, iOS would put out 100mA, but this was changed with iOS 4.2: I was going to need a powered hub, since the iPad provided very little power (20mA, I think). The next issue was hooking it up to an iPad for testing. I had used "A" when a switch was pressed, and "a" when it was released, so my changes were very minor - basically, just making it use a Keyboard.print() with the iCade sequence instead of a Serial.print().

On Monday, I got the Teensy up and running and, using the Teensyduino add-on, I was able to quickly modify my haunted house code to send iCade keys instead of my previous serial commands. The item was shipped the same day and I had it in my post office box the following Monday (wow!). Last Friday, I e-mailed in a question, which was quickly answered, then placed an order. Then, I read a blog comment thread somewhere that mentioned Teensy, and I ended up on this site and found there was a $16 ($19 with header pins) Arduino-like computer that has USB keyboard/mouse support built in. It looked like a hassel (load code, load USB keyboard firmware, test, load USB serial firmware, load new code, repeat) but it wouldn't require buying any parts or building anything. I then found out that the Arduino Duo could have the firmware reloaded with a version that made it look like a USB keyboard/mouse device, but to load code, it had to be running the serial port firmware. Using that, and some open source libraries, you could write USB keyboard commands that a computer would see as input. Further research led me to discover that you could build a USB interface with a few parts at a cost of a few bucks: I soon found out that the USB port on Arduino was just a serial device and could not act like a USB keyboard. This led me to think I could use an Arduino and hook the USB side to my iPad and roll my own interface. He had been creating a USB interface for a Super Nintendo controller: Recently, I ran across a blogger that discovered the iCade keyboard commands worked over a USB connection (via Apple's Camera Connector Kit).

While there were Bluetooth Shields for the Arduinos, they added quite a bit of cost so I never persued them. My former understanding was that the iCade was a bluetooth device, and I has assumed the only way to interact with it was via Bluetooth. While my experience with these types of hardware is new, I have a background with computers back to the VIC-20, and I used to work for Microware, the company that made the OS-9 embedded operating system. After a $35 trip to RadioShack, I was writing my first Arduino code and we ended up driving two of our attractions with them.
